My ‘self’, before the modern philosophers and psychologists began to disintegrate the notion, meant the coherent range of my consciousness, my awareness of the external world, the witness of my body as a recording organism in contact with the external world. This neat dichotomy of inner and outer, of stimulus and response, has proved to be too simple an explanation of the thought and behaviour of a human being.
